The University of Iowa School of Music has long been recognized as one of the finest music schools in the United States, having an international reputation. Its woodwind department, especially, has inherited a distinguished status from the work of former Professor and Director Dr. Himie Voxman, who joined the UI faculty in 1939 and held the directorship from 1954 to 1980. Prominent saxophonists have graduated from the University of Iowa School of Music. Among them are world-renowned pedagogue and soloist, Dr. Eugene Rousseau, former Professor of Saxophone and Director of the Crane School of Music at Potsdam, NY, Dr. James Stoltie, and Professor of Saxophone at the University of Southern Mississippi Dr. Lawrence Gwozdz.
